Three-strike policy against nursing homes proposed in Texas Senate bill

The Texas Senate last Monday, March 30 approved a measure that would revoke the license of nursing home facilities that are found guilty of abuse or neglect three times during a two-year period.

Republican Senator Charles Schwertner’s proposed legislation would also enable the Health and Human Services Commission to enlist the services of a non-profit organization to adjudicate some disputes involving nursing home facilities that are in conflict with state-issued standards of care. This particular move will enable state staff cuts, offsetting higher costs associated with revoking more nursing homes’ licenses.

The bill is now on its way for deliberation and debate on the Texas House of Representatives floor.
