Xarelto Side Effects

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has investigated and disputed Xarelto (rivaroxaban) manufacturer Bayer and Johnson & Johnson’s claim about their promotion of the anticoagulant as safe and effective. The FDA found that the company did not adequately warn consumers about Xarelto’s side effects that include wound complications and uncontrollable internal bleeding.

Patients taking Xarelto have had to endure unwanted and severe side effects that have required medical attention. Bleeding side effects have been the most severe as there are no known antidotes for the blood thinner.

Minor Side Effects & Symptoms
Some of the more common, but minor side effects of Xarelto include:

  • Arthritis
  • Itching
  • Low energy
  • Backache
  • Muscle spasm
  • Small skin blisters
  • Toothaches
  • Indigestion
  • Urinary tract infection

While these effects may be bothersome enough to warrant discontinuation of the drug as per doctor’s order, they are generally manageable.

Major Side Effects & Symptoms

If any of the following side effects occur while taking Xarelto, patients should contact their doctor immediately:

  • Serious back pain
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bloody stools
  • Bowel or bladder dysfunction
  • Coughing up blood
  • Increased menstrual flow or vaginal bleeding
  • Nosebleeds
  • Red or dark brown urine
  • Vomiting blood
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Numbness
  • Paralysis

The major side effects of Xarelto (internal bleeding, stroke, and pulmonary embolism) have proven themselves to be fatal, especially in elderly patients. If the patient is not aware of these side effects and hospitalized early enough, they run a higher risk of succumbing to these fatal side effects.

Uncontrolled Internal Bleeding

The most frequent life-threatening side effect of Xarelto has been internal bleeding which has led to exsanguination (bleeding to death) because the user did not catch the signs early enough. The risk of bleeding increases when Xarelto is taken in unison with other medications.

Bleeding caused by Xarelto and other Factor Xa inhibitors is especially dangerous because an antidote to the stop the bleeding caused by these medications does not currently exist. This leaves doctors with few alternatives to help patients suffering from this excessive side effect.

One of the most dangerous types of Xarelto bleeding is brain hemorrhaging. Xarelto has also been shown to cause more abdominal bleeding than Warfarin, yet less effective at treating blood clots.

Individuals who suffer from atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), who are undergoing spinal taps, or receive spinal anesthetics (epidurals) may be at additional risk of blood clots when taking Xarelto.

Patients who are receiving treatments for the previously mentioned conditions may form blood clots around the brain or spinal cord. These clots can cause strokes, long-term or permanent paralysis, and damage throughout the body.

Though Xarelto has been advertised as preventing strokes in patients who have atrial fibrillation, there are have been a number of lawsuits emerging from patients who have died because of strokes caused by taking the medication.

Post-Surgical Wound Complications and Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

Xarelto is often prescribed to patients who have undergone knee or hip surgery as a measure to prevent deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. In these cases, a blood clot from the lower extremities travels along the main pulmonary arteries up to the lungs, and like a stroke, the results can be fatal.

Furthermore, research suggest that when Xarelto is administered after such surgeries, there is a higher risk of wound complications.

Wound complications following a total hip or total knee arthroplasty while the patient is being treated by Xarelto includes:

  • Prolonged and excessive drainage
  • Infection
  • Leakage
  • Hematoma
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Site-specific chronic pain

Other adverse reactions that have been reports by patients taking Xarelto include:

  • Jaundice
  • Agranulocytosis
  • Anaphylactic reaction or shock
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Hemiparesis

Hospitalization for an extended amount of time is often required to deal with these serious side effects, especially when uncontrolled bleeding, strokes, or pulmonary embolisms occur. While medical attention may be able to fix the health issue, medical expenses will quickly increase.
