Black Lung Disease / Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis Lawyer
Much of the American industrial system is supported by coal and coal miners. Though many dangers associated with coal mining are immediate and obvious, black lung disease, also known as coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP) is both subtle and deadly.
If you or someone you love is suffering from the effects of CWP, you may be eligible for compensation under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 or other important laws. Contact Hotze Runkle, PLLC at 1-877-919-0830 to learn more about your legal rights.
Development of Black Lung Disease
Black lung disease is caused by long-term exposure to and inhalation of fine coal dust. When these foreign particles enter the lung, the body’s defenses envelop them. However, the human body is unable to rid itself of inhaled coal dust. Over time, the collection of coal dust increases, causing parts – or even the entirety – of the lungs to turn black.
Though CWP is a preventable ailment, it has deadly consequences if left untreated. Without medical care, simple CWP progresses to complicated CWP, and from there to progressive massive fibrosis, or PMF.
The Effects of Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis
The effects of early-stage simple CWP are generally mild, including shortness of breath or discomfort when breathing. As the disorder progresses and fibrotic scars form within the lungs, symptoms begin to include:
- Lung dysfunction
- Pain in the lungs
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Heart disorders
During the last decade, serious and fatal cases of CWP have been on the rise, despite federal regulations intended to protect coal miners. Studies estimate that well over 10,000 workers have died from black lung disease in the United States alone.
