“Three Strikes Rule” to improve Texas nursing homes up for House vote

According to a report released by Kaiser Health News of the Kaiser Family Foundation on May 14, around 51% of Texas’ nursing homes are rated “below average” or “much below average” on Nursing Home Compare. However, a new bill designed to improve the nursing home industry is currently up for vote in the Texas House of Representatives.

The bill, dubbed the “Three Strikes Rule,’ would close down any nursing health care facility that violated nursing home regulations three times within two years. Senate Bill 304 was filed by Senator Charles Schwertner (Republican of Georgetown) in response to an investigation by KVUE Defenders regarding the poor quality of Texas nursing home care.
